Lyngford House was built c. 1830 and the Stables c.1840. It was built for John Roy Allen who, in 1831, married Miss Watson of Bath. The House was latterly occupied by Captain Jefferys Phillip Thomas Allen, son of the late Colonel Charles Jefferys Watson Allen J.P. (High Sheriff of Somerset 1884), of Lyngford, who married Martha Anna, eldest daughter of H.P. Ree of Ditton, Torquay.
The Allens are an old West Country family traceable from the thirteenth century. They were connected with the Jefferys family by marriage, and members of it were associated with the Monmouth rebellion and have been holders of several important positions in the County of Somerset. Jefferys Allen J.P. of Bridgwater and Stocklinch Manor, Somerset was Receiver General of the County of Somerset and M.P. for Bridgwater for eighteen years. He was succeeded by his second, but eldest surviving son, John Roy Allen, J.P. Barrister-at-Law, who settled at Lyngford.
